My Big Fat Greek Wedding

My life is in ruins, in the Cast: Nia Vardalos, seemed an ideal choice for Expat review movies: The US-Greek classical scholar takes a job at the University of Athens, gets reduced, making the work as a guide. Perfect!

Well, not so much. Great idea, good roles that includes Richard Dreyfuss, one of my favorite actors of the time, but not so well executed. The writing is schmaltzy and heavy hand, the plot predictable, and outside of a few gorgeous shots of the Greek ruins, the film almost falls flat.

But seeing Vardalos, who is a good actress, of course, made me think about My Big Fat Greek Wedding, which she wrote and starred in. Initially, I had not planned to review it with the main character is not technically Expat, but seeing my life in ruins I think about it a whole new way.

In My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Vardalos plays Tula, the youngest daughter of Greek immigrants in Chicago. Her parents, immigrants, live in their own bubble of the Greek family and culture. They go into a restaurant – Greek, of course, is called Dancing Zorba – and the extended family is part of their daily lives in such a way as to seem quite well, foreign. As Toula explains:

“I’m Greek, right?” So what happens .. you can see, you have two cousins. I have 27 cousins. Just 27 cousins alone. And my whole family is big and loud, and everything in each other’s lives and Business all the time. As soon as you’ve never for a minute alone to think, because we are always together, just eat, eat, eat. only other people we know the Greeks, the reason the Greeks marry Greeks to breed more Greeks will be loud, breeding Greek eaters. None in my family never went to non-Greek before. nobody. ”

Toula’s father insists:

“There are two kinds of people. The Greeks, and all those who wish they was Greek.”

Thule was brought inside the bubble of Greek parents have created. She tried to escape from it, as a boy, but the dark hair of Tula and the Moussaka for lunch were rejected and teased her blond hair, the Wonder bread eaten sandwich classmates.
